Although the IBO recommends spending roughly 40 hours on the Extended Essay, the amount of time required can vary greatly based on your writing abilities, research methodology, and topic. Data gathering and analysis take longer for research-intensive subjects.


While the full study and data collecting will take about 15 to 25 hours, the preliminary research and topic selection usually takes 5 to 10 hours. You will have a more accurate notion of an extended essay timeline if you include writing and revising (15–20 hours) and final editing and formatting (5 hours).

Since these are estimations, you may require much more time to conduct research or write and revise reports. As a result, it's critical to begin early and remember your other IB obligations.
