Its structure typically consists of a metal or soft-seated disc mounted on a rod in the center of the pipe. The disc is positioned in such a way that when it's turned parallel to the flow, it allows for unrestricted flow, and when turned perpendicular to the flow, it blocks or throttles the flow.
